Live and Work

in Inspirational stories

Father was a hardworking man who delivered bread as a living to support his wife and three children. He spent all his evenings after work attending classes, hoping to improve himself so that he could one day find a better paying job. Except for Sundays, Father hardly ate a meal together with his family. He worked and studied very hard because he wanted to provide his family with the best money could buy.

Whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

The day came when the examination results were announced. To his joy, Father passed, and with distinctions too! Soon after, he was offered a good job as a senior supervisor which paid handsomely.

Like a dream come true, Father could now afford to provide his family with life’s little luxuries like nice clothing, fine food and vacation abroad.

However, the family still did not get to see father for most of the week. He continued to work very hard, hoping to be promoted to the position of manager. In fact, to make himself a worthily candidate for the promotion, he enrolled for another course in the open university.

Again, whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

Father’s hard work paid off and he was promoted. Jubilantly, he decided to hire a maid to relieve his wife from her domestic tasks. He also felt that their three-room flat was no longer big enough, it would be nice for his family to be able to enjoy the facilities and comfort of a condominium. Having experienced the rewards of his hard work many times before, Father resolved to further his studies and work at being promoted again. The family still did not get to see much of him. In fact, sometimes Father had to work on Sundays entertaining clients. Again, whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

As expected, Father’s hard work paid off again and he bought a beautiful condominium overlooking the coast of Singapore. On the first Sunday evening at their new home, Father declared to his family that he decided not to take anymore courses or pursue any more promotions. From then on he was going to devote more time to his family.

Father did not wake up the next day.

4. Ndoumah Victor — April 2, 2009 at 8:54 am

- We should be contented with the little we have.

- We should try and spend much time with our families and our love ones. For the company in which we work can replace us in a couple of days. But our love ones will miss us forever.

- One, two, or three complains, should make us reason good a little.

Be happy with what we are, now a days earning is also very much important in human life, but in earning don’t forget the life, give importance to the human values, spending time with family with little earning is better than not spending much time with family with much earning.

There could be 2 morals here to learn:

First: Keep working, or else you will die.

Second: Work and family must have a balance for a happy life.

Desires can be unlimited. One has to decide the level of basic necessities, what level of comfort and luxury one wants for himself and his family. On being a father his duty is also to creat his children into good citizens which can be achieved by living with his family.

50. Niro — December 1, 2010 at 4:11 am

We won’t know what will happen tomorrow. When we are not satisfied with what we have and go for more, life will become a burden and we start to suffer more. On the other hand if we were satisfied with what we have we wouldn’t lose what we already have in the first place. A rich man is a satisfied man and a poor man is someone who thinks that he does not have enough. It’s not the matter of money that labels us rich and poor.

51. Rakesh Bhawtankar — December 4, 2010 at 6:54 am

Very Good. This is reality of today’s scenario. We have to think seriously. ”WE ARE LEAVING LIFE FOR WORKING OR WORKING FOR LIFE LIVING”?

56. Holly — January 19, 2011 at 3:11 pm

we should be contented on what god give to us….dont ask too much…….

63. shan — February 22, 2011 at 1:07 am

Such a nice story, but we have to give importance to the both. A man should not only think of his profession, at the same time he has to give importance to his family. bcoz if he loses his job he can get something better than that, but if he loss his family he cant……………………..!!!@

nice story……….what an inspiring one….

67. Aditi — February 28, 2011 at 4:29 am

Why poor father has been blamed always? It’s not his wish to stay away from the family. Its the responsibility for his family that makes him harsh. lt’s not the fault of the father but the company gives them loads and loads of work to finish before leaving the office… poor for his bread and butter he has to obey. So don’t blame father instead help him, love him, show him by your good deeds that you, family will return his your hard work in this form.

68. Boran — March 11, 2011 at 5:06 am

We all should balance to everything done for better life in this world.

69. Boivet Figueroa — March 16, 2011 at 7:51 am

The story never mentioned God. Yes, the Father probably did everything he could for his family but without having thoughts for God… Herein where he lost…. We can work hard and make money, BUT when those things get the better of us, then we may be in dire poverty in our soul.

Don’t let riches – or the pursuit of riches- derail our relationship with our family and God…

70. Lyn — March 23, 2011 at 5:22 pm

i think his learning from series of education is not enough for him to be a manager. because to be a manager you must know how to manage your work and family. you cannot perform well in your job if you could not understand the setting priorities.

86. aditi — May 18, 2011 at 9:51 am

life is too short…….you need to set your priorities. money and comfort is not everything which a family needs from you. what they really need is only you. your love, your time. because a family is incomplete even in the absence of 1 member. so we need to understand this and need to maintain a balance in your life.
