Live and Work

Father was a hardworking man who delivered bread as a living to support his wife and three children. He spent all his evenings after work attending classes, hoping to improve himself so that he could one day find a better paying job. Except for Sundays, Father hardly ate a meal together with his family. He worked and studied very hard because he wanted to provide his family with the best money could buy.

Whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

The day came when the examination results were announced. To his joy, Father passed, and with distinctions too! Soon after, he was offered a good job as a senior supervisor which paid handsomely.

Like a dream come true, Father could now afford to provide his family with life’s little luxuries like nice clothing, fine food and vacation abroad.

However, the family still did not get to see father for most of the week. He continued to work very hard, hoping to be promoted to the position of manager. In fact, to make himself a worthily candidate for the promotion, he enrolled for another course in the open university.

Again, whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

Father’s hard work paid off and he was promoted. Jubilantly, he decided to hire a maid to relieve his wife from her domestic tasks. He also felt that their three-room flat was no longer big enough, it would be nice for his family to be able to enjoy the facilities and comfort of a condominium. Having experienced the rewards of his hard work many times before, Father resolved to further his studies and work at being promoted again. The family still did not get to see much of him. In fact, sometimes Father had to work on Sundays entertaining clients. Again, whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

As expected, Father’s hard work paid off again and he bought a beautiful condominium overlooking the coast of Singapore. On the first Sunday evening at their new home, Father declared to his family that he decided not to take anymore courses or pursue any more promotions. From then on he was going to devote more time to his family.

Father did not wake up the next day.

Well, sometimes we need sacrifices to get what we want for our loved ones. It’s his duty and he did it well. Now leave the rest to the family what he couldn’t.

  • Ram June 21, 2012, 12:29 am

Try to enjoy every movement, and do the hard work.

  • Dev June 17, 2012, 6:09 am

Giving more money to your loved ones does not mean that you are giving best. Emotions are more valuable than money. Love is also an emotion, it can’t be compared with money at all.

Give your loved ones emotional support, tell her how u love her, tell her that hw important she is for u. Spend quality time with her rather than sending her expensive gifts.

  • Mitts June 16, 2012, 12:52 pm

What a crap story.. We should be amitious and try to get the best for our loved ones. Finally when the man gets satisfied with his professional life, he dies. This is not giving a good message to the reader, in fact these types of stories are misleading the people who want to work hard for their families.

  • Olufemi Olujimi June 14, 2012, 3:27 am

I can’t get it. Nobody knew or decided when and where to be born. Neither does anybody knows when to be dead. One important thing to know is that how well or bad one lives on earth determines where he/she will be after leaving planet earth. I would try and live a good life of great legacy while on earth even though I later find that there is no heaven. But my good works will be speaking volumes for my justification.

  • Sufia Khan June 14, 2012, 1:05 am

  • Sonal jain June 9, 2012, 12:22 pm

I think in todays era we can’t say that money doen’t matter. It’t matter a lot but we can’t ignore our family for money. After all whatever we do is for family so if we don’t give time to our family then what’s the mean of all the effort we are doing. Money is not enough for them they also require love of there parents.

  • Kajol June 7, 2012, 5:54 am

  • Anonymous May 26, 2012, 1:38 pm

  • Baliram Shinde April 4, 2012, 6:58 am

Money is not everything, but without money you can’t do anything, father was right in his place, who have done all his responsibilities. He didn’t spend time with his family doesn’t matter but as per my knowledge he was a successful father. No one is perfect in his life, something is omitting everyone in his life by mistake, no one is prefect. We have learned lot of things from this story, everyone should maintain a balance between money and family.

  • Princy March 26, 2012, 6:52 am

Time and tide wait for none. Before the father realized it was too late. We should always remember that time is unpredictable.

  • Liza Lopez March 23, 2012, 12:57 am

  • Exodus February 26, 2012, 10:42 pm

Indeed heart breaking! Every moment is valuable and you should cherish it with the people who matters to you…. I grew up with my grandma until the time we’ve got separated. I haven’t seen her for over three years until such time that she died, that’s the saddest part of my life and most regretful as well… I just wished I could have hugged her before she went away…. you could just imagine how hard that is for me…

  • Shailaja February 21, 2012, 7:22 am

  • Sandeep February 16, 2012, 9:42 am
