Live and Work

Father was a hardworking man who delivered bread as a living to support his wife and three children. He spent all his evenings after work attending classes, hoping to improve himself so that he could one day find a better paying job. Except for Sundays, Father hardly ate a meal together with his family. He worked and studied very hard because he wanted to provide his family with the best money could buy.

Whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

The day came when the examination results were announced. To his joy, Father passed, and with distinctions too! Soon after, he was offered a good job as a senior supervisor which paid handsomely.

Like a dream come true, Father could now afford to provide his family with life’s little luxuries like nice clothing, fine food and vacation abroad.

However, the family still did not get to see father for most of the week. He continued to work very hard, hoping to be promoted to the position of manager. In fact, to make himself a worthily candidate for the promotion, he enrolled for another course in the open university.

Again, whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

Father’s hard work paid off and he was promoted. Jubilantly, he decided to hire a maid to relieve his wife from her domestic tasks. He also felt that their three-room flat was no longer big enough, it would be nice for his family to be able to enjoy the facilities and comfort of a condominium. Having experienced the rewards of his hard work many times before, Father resolved to further his studies and work at being promoted again. The family still did not get to see much of him. In fact, sometimes Father had to work on Sundays entertaining clients. Again, whenever the family complained that he was not spending enough time with them, he reasoned that he was doing all this for them. But he often yearned to spend more time with his family.

As expected, Father’s hard work paid off again and he bought a beautiful condominium overlooking the coast of Singapore. On the first Sunday evening at their new home, Father declared to his family that he decided not to take anymore courses or pursue any more promotions. From then on he was going to devote more time to his family.

Father did not wake up the next day.

Ohhh… it’s inspiring but a sad too. Sometimes it’s so difficult to manage all the things in order to be successful. How helpless was family and how bad situations were for the father.

  • Charlton Vaz August 17, 2013, 3:48 pm

Whatever he did, he did it for his family. He worked hard for them. made sure that they are contented not only with basic necessities but a little extra.

When he thought that it’s time to slow down and be with family, he passed away. Very unfortunate. The story is not inspiring at all, infact it’s depressing.

Everyone deserves a good life, of course it’s important to be with family but it’s more important to provide them with good food, good clothing and good shelter.

Really heart touching story…but there is one bad thing πŸ™‚ Ff he decided that he spend more time with his family; sadly next morning he is dead. Actually that’s not practically πŸ™‚ but dramatically that’s good way to end it up…but I was expecting good ending better than this πŸ™‚

A gone second can not be expected next time. Time is very precious and it would be more precious if you spend with your family. The meaning of success depends upon person to person, but eventually success could be turned into failure, if you lose your family and friends. To balance your life with your family and friend is the actually meaning of SUCCESS.

  • Rishav June 13, 2013, 11:35 pm

Family is top priority as when we lie on our death bed we are not going to remember how much money we earn but will repent for not spending too much time with our family.

Money never gives us contentment but family happiness gives. Thank you mummy papa for giving me such beautiful life.

  • Chirag May 19, 2013, 5:45 am

Emotional bonding is more important than money.

  • Ben Roko May 11, 2013, 8:28 pm

What a commitment. If he truly did that for his family, with all his heart and might, then rest assured he has achieved inner peace and total satisfaction that his family’s future is secured.

  • Vikas Gandhi May 8, 2013, 3:00 pm

Nice story. Sometime we give importance to things for our near and dear ones but don’t realise the most precious thing for them is our time. One should plan the time accordingly as we never know what time has planned for us.

Fathers life is like that only. He does everything for family, but very rare he will be a part of it.

  • Alfred Banda April 21, 2013, 12:08 pm

Touching story, this is what we do in our lives, yes we have to work but we also need to rest too. Spending time to Thank God for what he has given us, spend time with our family and friends even if it’s only for a minute.

Had he dreamed for more he wouldn’t have died…he got complacent and lost his purpose in life….and that ended his life.

  • Person of Realism April 20, 2013, 4:32 am

The father is really noble in my thoughts. He contributed all his life to work, didn’t he? No, he did not. That was only surface that everyone could see easily. In depth so far from that, he DID contribute his life to his family, his beloved ones. With such a hard start, he understood that he must work for his next generation, next next generations so he must sacrifice himselfe for them and he did; even thought how giant his disire to gather with his wife and children was. And, he had to pay so expensive cost for that sacrifice. That is nothing but previous moments beside his beloved one.

  • Erika April 12, 2013, 4:39 am

Time with your loved ones is much important than anything else you need to spend it with full of memories because you’ll never know when will be the last.

  • Erika April 12, 2013, 4:34 am

As we all know life is not easy to live with. It takes a lot of sacrifices but, we should also think that if we sacrifice for others its for their own happiness not on what you think is better.

  • Altaf April 1, 2013, 3:44 pm

It shows our attraction of something which change right direction of our life.

  • Kislay kumar jha March 30, 2013, 2:49 am

This story had clearly visualized that we should not isolate work from family. Work may get change, venue may change but family cannot. Family is like rock, together we can do anything and everything that need to be understood.

  • Mark Elnazir March 24, 2013, 3:04 am

This short story was highly agreeable, and it is trying to tell us to spend more time with the family rather than the amount of time you spend on working. Moreover we don’t know when and where we will die.

  • Mariam Eltanany March 24, 2013, 3:03 am

This story tells that the father was only keen about his work and he didn’t allocate enough time to interact with his family. He was a one track minded father, he was materialistic he only looked for getting money and registering for courses to get a higher postion and at the end he died without having good life with his family.

  • Engy March 24, 2013, 3:02 am

The father should balance his priorities which are his work and his family. He thought that his commitment in working hard to satisfy their financial needs is what his family wants.

  • Mahmoud March 24, 2013, 3:02 am

We should cherish the moments we have in our life and the time we have should be spent it with our family instead of work, because who think that spending all of our time on work is for the sake of the family, is doing his life wrongly.

  • Osama March 24, 2013, 3:01 am

You need to balance between your job and your social life. You cannot live without either of them as you share your career success with your family.

  • Monica Karkousha March 24, 2013, 3:00 am

We should not live all our life working, we should manage our time because otherwise our life will be totally materialistic. Enjoy your time with family, friends and work .. And that’s how life goes happily.

  • Menna March 24, 2013, 2:58 am

The father didn’t balance between his social life with his children and his work. He focused on achieving his goal but not engrossing in his offspring lives.

  • Kumarxd March 23, 2013, 1:00 pm

    Nice one

  • Caleb March 21, 2013, 12:12 am

Wow! That makes a whole lot of sense, yet it is so tragic… It is a lesson to learn for all those people who think work is more important than time with family. We should thus treasure our limited time on this earth.

  • Furies March 12, 2013, 9:21 am

    Heart touching…..

  • Ayaz Ahmed Soomro February 24, 2013, 11:31 am

It is the more intresting story because if one man all day work for his family at the end of the day if he gives death it is very sadness for the family member of that person who all day work for his family but he can not enjoy for the seek of money.

  • Rishu February 21, 2013, 4:44 am

Very nice story. Definitely we should give sometime to our family members. But in this story, the father was not doing anything wrong … he wanted to see his family happy.

He did not want his children to go through that struggle which had in his life. If he would have given time to his family instead of studying new courses or working hard, one day his family would have been disappointed bcoz their father is not able fulfill their needs. In this Life, either you can stay happy or keep others Happy.

  • Glezel February 19, 2013, 9:16 am

Using things and loving people is the way that life should be. For loving things and using people only leads to misery. Let God be the center of the family…..

  • Raju Reddy February 11, 2013, 6:05 am

  • Sumera February 10, 2013, 1:16 am

  • Keith December 28, 2012, 10:46 am

Casting Crowns has a wonderful song called The American Dream that is very similar to this story. They sing that the family doesn’t want all the finer things the Father was trying to provide, all they really wanted was him.

  • Ruthra December 26, 2012, 7:19 am

  • Priya Prasad November 20, 2012, 2:36 am

Initially when he was poor then also the family desired for the time to spend with him and even after he became rich the desire was the same.

Then what’s the point in earning so much when you are unable to fulfill your families desires. MONEY CAN ONLY BUY LUXURIES AND NOT HAPPINESS IN LIVES……..

  • Jayson November 19, 2012, 8:51 am

I’m really learning from this site and all comments too. For the story it very nice, it has a dimensional moral in it depends to our insight. But 4me the father did a great job for his family he is really an ideal one that father should be.. But too sad when he decided to spend time with his family its already time’s up to him.

  • Abhimanyu November 19, 2012, 3:42 am

The father didn’t get to spend much time with his family but at least he had done enough before dying so that his family would live comfortably even after his death…nice story…

  • vinod November 17, 2012, 5:34 am

Really heart touching story….though I spend equal time with my family and work, I learnt many things now…indeed both relation and profession are vital therefore we have to justify both the things…….

  • MY November 16, 2012, 9:37 am

Spent half of my life working 247 for a major MNC during my prime time, now I am 52 & I really regret a lot as I look back – I could have lived a fuller life instead of selling my soul to the corporation, which does not even value any hard working & long serving contributing staff.

It was really not worthwhile & meaningless, as we were just instruments to the company making millions of dollars.

  • Yogi November 16, 2012, 4:47 am

It is always easy to say to remain happy with what you have in life but when you don’t deliver the expected to your loved ones except time then your time won’t be much worthy for them.

  • Tula lucas November 14, 2012, 6:43 pm

Being greedy doesn’t pay, but spending enough time with your family is something that u can’t do once u dead. Family comes first cause they’re your foundation, if it wasn’t for them, you wouldn’t be working that hard.
