The mouse trap

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package. “What food might this contain?” the mouse wondered. He was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning: “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!”

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, “Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it.”

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!” The pig sympathized, but said, “I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers.”

The mouse turned to the cow and said, “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!” The cow said, “Wow, Mr. Mouse. I’m sorry for you, but it’s no skin off my nose.”

So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer’s mousetrap alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house – like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey. The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital and she returned home with a fever.

Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup’s main ingredient. But his wife’s sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer’s wife did not get well; she died. So many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.

The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness. So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn’t concern you, remember, when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another. Each of us is a vital thread in another person’s tapestry.

An eye opener. It is a lashing to stupid people who live for themselves with the selfish principle, “Not my circus, not my monkeys.”

Good story…. Now a days no one is thinking about others in life. Everyone is selfish about their lives…. We must treat others with brotherhood…

  • Mark December 12, 2012, 11:55 pm

Lesson learned…we should give help to others who are in need to the best of our effort we can give.

  • Rarr May 10, 2012, 5:09 pm

Ahaha everyone seems to have a convenient misunderstanding about this story. The moral is still “helping others,” but it’s more complex than that…

If the animals are smart enough to know what a mousetrap is, surely they would know they’re being raised to eventually be eaten. That selfish mouse never once offered to help them out of their predicaments, and only wanted his own wish fulfilled. But even if he actually decided to help the others, they broke into the house, and the mousetrap (for argument’s sake: the only one in existence) was destroyed, guess what? The snake would’ve eaten the mouse! How’s that for irony?

Maybe they should have all been less complacent and done something to better themselves. Even then, it would hinge on the mouse, as the only free creature. Maybe it’s just too hard to be proactive…

The story reveals the real attitude of the present mankind. Unless such chicken-pig-cow mentality is changed, we are on the verge of extinction.

  • ITUMELENG STEPHEN July 9, 2011, 1:05 pm

This story just emphasized the point that we are all one, breathing the same air, make the same stuff. If one of us is threatened, we all are threatened. Wow.

Seeing the comments made by different people on the same story, reminds me of a similar story that being the story of the blind men and the elephant, each interpreting their own view on the same thing differently.

Nice story given by a nice Person..Contain good Moral..

  • Sav August 25, 2010, 4:44 pm

I read this to my kids. They really liked it especially its moral. However from my past personal experience I can say that one shouldn’t trust anybody for pretending s/he is going get help after being helpful to others. Favours may most often not be returned in life unless you know throughly the people you’re helping.

  • Rikki July 29, 2010, 7:44 am

Great Story! I used it to drive a point home for my Toastmasters project on the “Moral of the Story”. I also, coincide it with Gen 4:9 “Am I My Brother’s Keeper”? The group loved the it!

  • Gopi July 17, 2010, 1:38 am

Help other and get help from others.

  • Adil Khan June 10, 2010, 9:55 pm

Very powerful moral lesson for the human beings. We are so selfish that we are only concerned about our own life tat we do not try to do the exta step that can do a lot of good to others withut us having to lose anything.

  • Vishakha May 21, 2010, 10:43 pm
