A glass of Milk, paid in Full

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.

Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk.

He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?”

“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.”

He said, “Then I thank you from my heart.”

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Year’s later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room.

Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to the case.

After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room.

She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She began to read the following words:

“Paid in full with one glass of milk.

Signed, Dr. Howard Kelly.”

I feel The Young lady’s help is greatest in this context because she helped the boy in the most miserable condition of hunger without expecting any return from him. But what Dr Kelly has done is he just repaid for what she has done for him.

Dear Dr. Howard Kelly – If you help People who have helped you – that is Only Gratitude and there is nothing great in the act. Jesus has Teached us to Help People from whom you can expect back no help – ie called Greatness. Dude – Accept this and Change your Attitude.

  • Courtney June 28, 2011, 10:35 pm

Now that was great! I learned that we can come from nothing to being something as long as we do not forget who help us to get there. It it also shows that we only need to pay that respect in how we earn it; money is not everything.

  • Dr Pramod Arora September 1, 2010, 6:28 am

A wonderful and touching story. It compels me to share with all, a similar experience,a decade back.

It was a cold wintry mid night in Delhi. At a desolate spot, my two wheeler developed a snag. I could not fix it and was stranded. The roads were deserted. looking around for help, i spotted some people huddled around a bonfire, some 100 meters away. I dragged my scooter there and asked for a mechanic, if any, in the vicinity. An elderly looking gentleman from the group, sent a boy for a mechanic. The boy returned soon, only to tell the mechanic has gone somewhere and will come soon. Middle of the night, amongst strangers i had my own doubts and apprehensions, about the mechanic. What if he refuses to work so late at night. As for exhorbitant charges, I was willing to pay happily. It was not long before a thin built young boy came and asked the problem. He was the mechanic. He took over and spent app one hour to fix the problem. I profusely thanked him, and asked how much I owed him for the job. To my utter surprise, he refused any money. When I persisted, this apparently semiliterate MAN said politely: Earn I whole day. I need not work for money at this hour of the night. I came for the sake of humanity and I cannot charge for that.

I was dumbfounded but he did not, even, wait for my Thanks. I always keep him in my prayers. I pray may his tribe increase many fold and I be one of them.

  • Sonam July 4, 2010, 5:49 am

It is a lovely and fantastic story. If we help someone then later when we are in trouble they will help us like this story…

  • Jeny April 14, 2010, 10:59 am

This story tells us clearly that “Service to Man is Service to God”. We must first think that how we’re getting help in our tough times. That’s , We are not getting help from Man We are getting help from God through Man’s kind heart. If you see clearly We’re not getting help from everyone we expect to help us at times. But if you really believe in God and ask him for help then surely you’ll get it from somebody whom you may not known even before. That’s the simple logic which we can’t analyse and understand but can feel and realise………

@Anna, in the beginning of the storie a little boy was given a glass of milk by a stranger. The woman would not take payment from the boy. This boy grew up, finished school, and became a doctor.

Now the woman who gave him a glass of milk became sick. The doctor that took her case just so happened to be that very same little boy that she gave the milk to. Remember she would not take payment for her act of kindness? When she got the bill for all of her treatments, she saw that her act of kindness WAS REPAID back to her. The doctor basically was saying in that phrase “You helped me when I needed help, Now I am returning your kindness. Consider your bill paid in full with that glass of milk you gave to me years ago.”
