The important things in life

A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up the remaining open areas of the jar.

He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “Yes.”

“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter – like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else, the small stuff.”

“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party, or fix the disposal.”

“Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

I agree with the story. We have to care of the important things that we have in life as the family friends, because they always going to be supporting us. Something has higher priority than others.

  • Joaquín September 7, 2011, 9:32 am

I agree, people forget what really important in life. You have to give priority to your family, because they are always support you in your life. This show me a lesson, we dont have to spend time on the small stuff.

This story is wonderful. If we read this story well, we can know that family is impotant to everybody… We have to be more consider with important thing in our life… First do important things.. and then we will do wathever we want to do. Also this story help us to understand what important is family, love, job..

We have to be more consider and more interesting in priority thing in our lifes.

This is a fantastic story, I believe that the philosphy teacher did an amazing job on that analogy, showing his students that sitting your priorities in life is one of the, if not the most, important things in life, simply because if we don’t set our priorities we will never be able to complete anything we propose.

  • Karina Castillo September 7, 2011, 9:27 am

“Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

This quote has really marked me, because I was the kind of person that used to spend her time with sand, little things in my life, things that sometimes doesn’t even matter and then i felt my life was empty and i didn’t realize that i was leaving behind the most important things… so now i know what and who really are the “rocks” in my life.
This reading was really important, we need to focus our life in something that really matters, and then we are gonna realize that “rocks” are the stronger thing we have and in we trust more.

But the small things doesn´t necessary have to be negative, sometimes a little tiny thing can make a huge difference or a big change of the way you see things, for example: little things like that moment when you talk to someone you were interested in and it changes the image that the person might have had of you, because you might be starting a new friendship

  • Jilma Sequeira August 31, 2011, 4:18 pm

  • Ramakulai June 22, 2011, 12:33 pm

Yes, it is a really good story. The moral of the story also tells us how to utilise our valuble time in a day. If we consider the jar is 24 hours in a day, what would we do in 24 hours? First we can do whatever the important works there is, finish the work first. Then do whatever unimportant works.
