Keep your dream

in Motivational stories

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs.

The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, “I want to tell you why I let Jack use my horse. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.

“That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.

“He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after class.’

“The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, `Why did I receive an F?’

“The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you’ll have to pay large stud fees. There’s no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher added, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.’

“The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.’ “Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all.

He stated, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.”

Monty then turned to the assembled group and said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.” He added, “The best part of the story is that two summers ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.” When the teacher was leaving, he said, “Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption not to give up on yours.”

“Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.”

I have failed a lot in life and now at this point in time I have decided to cooperate with God’s Graces and do his will and actually live to my fullest potential with the abilities he blessed me with.

When I was younger I let everybody and anybody sway me and discourage me from doing the right thing and I realize now so many years later, that I have only myself to blame for all those failures of mine.

Never let anybody ever tell you that you can’t accomplish anything in life, because with GOD all things are possible. I’m 43 and I’m going to school for the first time since I was in High School. Yes I can and so can you. Thanks for this very inspiring story.

It’s tough to stick to your goal or stick to rightoeusness in adverse situations. We all do adjustments and compromises but the Boy did not do.

It is a wonderful story of a boy’s determination to keep his dream and make it happen. How sad to think teachers can ruin any childs dream and put them down, that is not what
a good teacher does. I was disappointed that the author did not have the father be more supportive of his son’s dream. Yes, it was an important decision, but as a father, he should have said something better than that.

54. Failing girl — January 5, 2012 at 2:05 pm

I have been going through a lot lately. I consider myself a disgrace. I just go with the flow of life each day. It’s like I can’t hold on anymore. My dreams seem like a distant future and I even have stopped believing in them. The one thing I have leared in life is that people in the world will never believe in you till they have seen you succeed and so a person should just believe in himself always. This story made me cry and made me believe in my dreams once again. My dream is to become a writer. I have had many writings published but I still think that I am not good enough. But from now on I am going to wait, believe in myself and am going to see myself hail heights. Thanks a tonne. :-)

106. The Singer — September 23, 2012 at 9:49 am

My Dream!

I dream of becoming a famous singer/songwriter and incorporate my piano playing into my music.

One of my closest friends, who was going to become a doctor because her father was one and she had always dreamed of helping others, told me that my dream would be almost impossible to achieve. That it was unrealistic and I might need to reconsider goals.

I was angry for days.

But deep down I believed her to be right. So the next day, I called her up on my cell phone and forgave her. I told her I agreed with her and should probably give up my dream for a different one. She apologized for hurting me. She said that she still believes my dream is almost impossible to achieve.

I simply smiled sadly even though she couldn’t see me. I quietly replied, “I know.”
She then said that she had to go but she would call me later.

I had lost my phone the following day.
By the time I had found it I had a voicemail.
It was her.
I pressed play.

Her voice resonated through the small speakers with seriousness , “I’m not sure when you’ll get this message, but you need to hear it. I have to tell you something. You know… almost impossible isn’t impossible. Your dream is unrealistic, but so is your talent. If anyone can dream that dream it’s you, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a back up plan.” she sighed, “This world is big and filled with cruel people. You might feel hurt. You might feel alone. And you might feel lost. But that only means you should try harder. I didn’t want you to get hurt in the future, but that’s how we achieve our dreams. Through hard work and pain. That’s why I said ALMOST impossible, because really? If we can travel to the moon, the sky isn’t the limit anymore. And if the sky isn’t the limit…Then what is? You can do anything if you take it on one step at a time. See you on Monday.”

I was so happy when I saw her the next day that I tackle hugged her on sight.

But that was a little over a year and a half ago.

My highschool graduation was last year, but my friend wasn’t there.
She died a month before graduation because of a car accident with a drunk driver.
She had never fulfilled her dreams.
If she had lived she would have been class valedictorian.

I visit her grave every month and tell her what’s going on in the life she left behind. I tell her about my dreams and how I’m getting closer to my goal. In fact just last week I recieved an invitation to join a band as the vocalist and keyboardist.

Today I went to her grave again.
And I told her what had happened.

I’m achieving my dream.
One step at a time.

I don’t know what to feel esp for the teacher, but I think if it wasn’t because of the teacher Monty will never be able to be as strong as he is to achieve what he wanted. This is Amazing! I salute Monty for not giving up or losing hope and believing in himself that he can make it despite of his teacher looking of haughty disdain about his dream.

108. Denim Fitch Delvaux — October 2, 2012 at 6:14 am

The Singer, You touched my life. Thank you for sharing your story. This is something I should take as a reminder, most of the time I’m anxious of my goals. The people around me tends to get me on the brink of failure. I always lose hope. And I did not know what to do, and almost give up but I always think of the people who believe in me tho they are a few still there is someone who do believes I can. Thank You The Singer.

—- what a great story!!!
—- one of the moral lesson is dont let those people who possessed a small mind and heart to convinced you that your dreams are too big for you. Because as long as you believe on it and had a dedication to do there’s always a way to come it realistic.

This is an excellent story for Adolescents. It will surely help him by not giving up his own GOLDEN DREAMS.

116. Carlos — November 15, 2012 at 1:33 am

This was a great story, leaving a great mark in the readers heart and soul. We could not deny the fact that sometimes even our teachers belittle our capabilities but this doesn’t mean that we should stop dreaming. Make the IMPOSSIBLE.

I’m POSSIBLE. Thank you very much for the inspiration that I have garnered from the story.

117. Carlos — November 15, 2012 at 1:58 am

I have a dream of becoming a great seafarer but my family questioned my capability and there I told myself to challenge them, to show to them and to the world what I’ve got.

I am a small person, every school that I entered to I’ve never experienced to be the second smallest, but always the first. Many of my classmates laughed at me when stand at the center of the class. They would always ask me “Are you really our classmates?” after that question was happiness to them. I ran to the backdoor and there I cried but I wanted to be strong I didn’t want to be weak, so I got up and walked to my seat embarrassed and from then on I never cried again.

Years passed, at last I graduated from high school, and their my parents asked me what course I will take, I answered them marine, I want to be a great seafarer. Then my mother replied, “Are you not tired of dreaming nothing, when will you stop, when will you wake up?” Then, I ran into my room but that time I did not cry.

After a few days I heard a humor concerning about scholarship for a marine student. I did not waste my time and I supposedly take the exam but later I knew that they require a height to their cadets.

The captain looked at me and asked, “Do you really want to be a marine engineer?”

I said sure, since a child it has been my dream but….. ok don’t worry I’ll choose you as my cadet. I have seen determination within you and I really want to have cadets like that.

I was shocked, “Really sir? Thanks a lot.”

Until I got home I still wonder how I got the scholarship. The captain was a gift from heaven he didn’t even looked me, at my size and my height and from then on I learned that it takes determination and perseverance to achieve everything you want as they say, “if there’s a will, there’s a way”.

This is really an inspiring story!.. “Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.” This line caught my attention. Don’t be discouraged by what other people think and say. What’s more important is your happiness though sometimes you are facing some difficulties/trials in achieving it. Don’t worry, it will be your strengths to push more ..and be successful in your life.

One of the best stories I have read today. Not only story of a boy but also singer’s comment with excellent feedback by everyone. May God fulfil wills of all of us.

121. Aachanta — December 12, 2012 at 5:13 am

Dear team, you are doing an excellent job please keep it up….apart from the main story I would like to specially appreciate the comments from “The Singer (#104)” and “Carlos (#115)” even their stories are faith building and inspiring…

God always gives us a choice to select a course of action in thought, word and deed it is we with ignorance tread on the not so good path…we shall hold on to this particular thought and pray to god to lead us in a way that is best suited and pleasant for our lives….

In a single line to say “it’s simply superb!!!”

I like the one man: God, how much is a million years? God: To me it’s one minute. Man: God how much is a million dollars? God: To me it’s a penny. Man: Give me a penny. God: wait for a minute.

There is no one can steel our dreams when we believe in our dreams.

Dreams is all we got true in our mind. The rest is just 21st century breakdown copy style.

Following a dream is a tough task as we get so many hurdles in between but if we are motivated we can achieve it.

This is one of the greatest stories have ever read. Very inspiring and encouraging. We must be our dreams intact, to avoid dream stealers and killers.

145. Rainer Proksch — August 6, 2013 at 7:33 am

Really an inspiring story. Dreams are the steps to our success. If we live for our dreams and never go away from, we will definitely be able to achieve it. One thing that I would like to say here is that, we should always respect and encourage someone’s dream and goal and never discourage them. Teachers should always teach students on how to be able to reach their goals, not to discourage them.

146. Shekhar — August 8, 2013 at 9:39 am

Man is successful to complete his dream when his dream comes from the heart and dream is aim of his life. Does’t matter of any problem come on his life he just easily throws the problem outside from the aim and became complete in him.

I was really awoken by the stories.

155. Ahmed — March 15, 2014 at 12:34 pm

This story gives a very wrong moral. You have to follow your society, environment etc that you are living in and then analyze whatever you want to do is suitable and acceptable by the society you are living in or NOT. Don’t let yourself be totally free. There should be certain boundries. Freeing yourself from all the clutches will take you towards evils most of the times. Like a famous hindi saying,
“Aik Ali baba aur 40 choor”
(Out of 40

156. Dinaaftaani — April 4, 2014 at 9:37 pm

This story reminds me to my grandmom. She used to tell me if you have a dream you must pursuit it.
