Face difficulties positively

in Moral stories

This parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule fell into the farmer’s well. The farmer heard the mule praying or whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer sympathized with the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving. Instead, he called his neighbors together, told them what had happened, and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery.

Initially the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back, a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back, HE WOULD SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP!

This he did, blow after blow. “Shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up!” He repeated to encourage himself. No matter how painful the blows, or how distressing the situation seemed, the old mule fought panic and just kept right on SHAKING IT OFF AND STEPPING UP!

It wasn’t long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of that well! What seemed like it would bury him actually helped him . . . all because of the manner in which he handled his adversity.

THAT’S LIFE! If we face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to give in to panic, bitterness, or self-pity.

Nice Story.. I really love it!

55. PlantingSeeds — March 9, 2012 at 3:10 pm

My mother told me this story as a child. I am reminded of it every time I face adversity in my life (recently a severe attack of gout–very, very painful). The attitude of the old mule (as one old mule to another ;-) ), got me through it. I have learned these stories taught young in life live with you forever and can be your comfort and salvation when all seems lost.

64. Lillianne — May 20, 2012 at 6:40 am

Hmmm…. with the dirt falling wouldn’t it just turn into mud with the water around the donkey? Then from mud become quick sand, that pretty much never allows him to shake it off once the mud is over his back. The story never says the well was empty with no water.

65. Marcus — May 21, 2012 at 5:00 am

It is a very lovely tale. It encourages us to face the challange of life with optimistic faith in God through our lord Jesus Christ, and not to give up our possitive heart desire no matter what.

74. Mikhan — July 16, 2012 at 6:07 am

Where there is a will there is a way……!

It was sheer grit, determination and the survival instinct that made the doneky to face the adversities with a cool and think positive attitude to have come out of the situation…….!

Whereas it also speaks of the selfish attitude on part of the farmer…one must keep cool under such circumstances like that of the donkey….

89. Sharon Eunice — September 27, 2012 at 4:46 pm

At first, I was guessing what would happen. I was surprised how the mule got out the well. It really encouraged me so much… Those negative things that we experience will lead us to success, only if we know how to handle pressures in life. It’s also nice to remember that Jesus Christ once ride on a mule while people salute him. :)

This brief but exceptionally challenging story is a real bulldozer. It filled me with more strength & energy. From the time I read it I have purposed to make use of it in my sermons to motivate my people.

I think it is necessary for anyone having seen it to share it with others the same way, for it is a treasure.

It is awesome. Whenever I am in trouble I will remember this story.

95. Madiha Abbas — November 5, 2012 at 12:00 am

Highly motivating. We all should learn to behave wisely like the mule as we all face problems in our daily life its upon us to be bitter or act sweet and be happy in the end.

As an adult we have a noble responsibility to be a role model for our youngers so we can teach them by acting positively so they can also learn to look in the eye of troubles rather then runnig away.
