in Motivational stories

Once a fisherman was sitting near seashore, under the shadow of a tree smoking his beedi. Suddenly a rich businessman passing by approached him and enquired as to why he was sitting under a tree smoking and not working. To this the poor fisherman replied that he had caught enough fishes for the day.

Hearing this the rich man got angry and said: Why don’t you catch more fishes instead of sitting in shadow wasting your time?

Fisherman asked: What would I do by catching more fishes?

Businessman: You could catch more fishes, sell them and earn more money, and buy a bigger boat.

Fisherman: What would I do then?

Businessman: You could go fishing in deep waters and catch even more fishes and earn even more money.

Fisherman: What would I do then?

Businessman: You could buy many boats and employ many people to work for you and earn even more money.

Fisherman: What would I do then?

Businessman: You could become a rich businessman like me.

Fisherman: What would I do then?

Businessman: You could then enjoy your life peacefully.

Fisherman: Isn’t that what I am doing now?

Moral – You don’t need to wait for tomorrow to be happy and enjoy your life. You don’t even need to be more rich, more powerful to enjoy life. LIFE is at this moment, enjoy it fully.

As some great men have said “My riches consist not in extent of my possessions but in the fewness of my wants”.

it is true that your are needed to enjoy your life at any time without considering the condition which you have at the moment

7. Kevin — April 25, 2010 at 3:45 am

teaching a man how to fish doesn’t necessarily make him a cartel owner….unless he is happy doing it and has a “want to”.
I’d rather be happy on the journey than thinking happiness was found only in possessions and / or large cashflow.

Absolutely incredible. This is truth. When you hear the truth, you get it. This story makes perfect sense. Happiness is a choice. You can choose to experience it later, in which case you will develop a mindset of being happy later which will carry on into your retirement life. This leads to neediness for the rest of your life. Or you can be happy now, and not worry about being needy. Great job, I love this post, thank You so much. It was great to read a story of this nature.

48. Sumit Ranjan — October 14, 2011 at 1:17 am

Really an amazing and strong story….no doubt in that……………but one point that we should never forget is that althoug you have got everything , all wealth , possesions but then also u should aspire to go to more higher heights together with enjoying your current moments……you should not stop at any point…keep going forward along with enjoying ur current moments….life is a precious gift given by god to any human being…

72. Rajesh — June 2, 2012 at 8:45 am

Moral is way to life.

73. Rick — June 27, 2012 at 9:10 pm

It is a good story with a righteous moral. However, what the businessman was saying is sitting around lazily enjoying doing nothing w/o worry is not very fulfilling or even in some way morally justified. It should be one’s right to live that way and if it makes one happy, then so be it. And there is a happy medium. From my point of view, he was lazy and w/o ambition and he will continue to sit under that tree forever, that’s his choice and right. But, I wouldn’t want to depend on him for anything and I certainly wouldn’t.

74. Dafni Fernandes — July 31, 2012 at 9:51 am

Suprisingly it is set in India, where it’s not just a story but a way of life for so many… I learned exactly that from villagers across the country.

82. Jorz — October 2, 2012 at 1:15 am

Lazy people admire the poor fisherman’s way of thinking while I admire the rich man, because the rich man think of helping others by giving them jobs, thinking the someday they will be a businessmen too.

I’m still 16 and I think I have more than enough time to figure out what I wanna do in life. I’m stressed out with school at the moment. But I just love this story :D
