Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.
Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.
The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.
As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.
One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by.
Although the other man couldn’t hear the band – he could see it. In his mind’s eye as the gentleman by th! e window portrayed it with descriptive words.
Days and weeks passed.
One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.
As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.
Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.
He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed.
It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window
The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.
She said, “Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.”

Read it early morning one day, laying in bed ill. I could not hold back my tears. Truly very touching story. You realise the real importance of those who have helped you in bad times.
In this story, the blind man wanted his roommate to be happy by his imagination of saying the story even he was feeling happy the moral is when we make others happy internally we feel happy but we ourselves can’t know.
I love this story, it was an awesome story.
Even though it’s been a while, since it first appeared, the story made me cry and my students loved it they went into tears. We need more authors like this anonymous author. Kinds of needing to read more stories like this one.

Truly a beautiful story…I read this a while ago. I so badly wish it could have been published. I’ve found the owner, and she’s an amazing person who talks with as much inspiration as this story gives all the time. I truly wish she could have gotten the appreciation she deserves. Naziyah, you did a great job.
I cried when I read the story, it was really inspiring and heart-touching.

Why are people calling this just a ‘story’. This is fuel for the journey of life amidst our friends, a correction of mistakes of selfishness.
Am in inspired whenever I read it!

Very inspiring…Thanks
Awesome story which is to be encouraged.
I’m holding my tears back as I was reading the story. In some ways it conveys that no matter who you are-rich/poor, ill/healthy etc. We can still help other people, be it small or big.. What’s important is we live life for others as we should supposed to do. Hats off to the author! Can’t wait to share this.
We should think about a real change in our attitude and behaviour after reading this story.. To live happily in this world, we should make others happy and if all the people think about making others happy like the blind man did, how beautiful this world was!
Great story.
I found this story when I was 8 and it has kept me inspired ever since. Beautiful moral and message; keep it up. As my grandmother always said, “I see, said the blind man.”
One of the Best stories I have read.
Great example of encouragement.
One of the best stories I have read.
Interesting story…..
This story is a teaching in itself how one so lifeless and deprived himself could so efficiently describe something just for sake of small happy moments of others life….that’s really wonderful to memorize and practice….
This story is over 50 years old, I thought O. Henry wrote it. However I cannot find it mentioned in his works, the first time I saw it was in the late 50’s or early 60’s on a TV SHOW I thought it was the O. henry playhouse but I am probably wrong.
However when i saw it, it was I think two men in a prisoner of war hospital in Germany, If you have ever read any of O.Henry’s works like the gift of magi or the Ransom of red chief, you can see, the similarities. However, it is a good story and shows the two sides of human nature: oh in the one I saw, when the one man died and the other one was moved to the window, he did the same thing for his roommate. You know lied to him!
Made my tears like crystals.
What is the quote or text that supports that short stories help us in life?
Thanks. A very inspiring story… Two thumbs up.
This is a really great story. That guy was really trying to lighten the other guy’s mood. Sad that he passed away.
It’s a nice story, it tells we should encourage friends upto our limit.
This story is beautiful!
Heart touching….!
