After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. She said, “I love you, but I know this other woman loves you and would love to spend some time with you.”
The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my MOTHER, who has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie. “What’s wrong, are you well?” she asked.
My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news. “I thought that it would be pleasant to spend some time with you,” I responded. “Just the two of us.” She thought about it for a moment, and then said, “I would like that very much.”
That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. She smiled from a face that was as radiant as an angel’s. “I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed, “she said, as she got into the car. “They can’t wait to hear about our meeting.”
We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print. Half way through the entries, I lifted my eyes and saw Mom sitting there staring at me. A nostalgic smile was on her lips. “It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small,” she said. “Then it’s time that you relax and let me return the favor,” I responded. During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation – nothing extraordinary but catching up on recent events of each other’s life. We talked so much that we missed the movie. As we arrived at her house later, she said, “I’ll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you.” I agreed.
“How was your dinner date?” asked my wife when I got home. “Very nice. Much more so than I could have imagined,” I answered.
A few days later, my mother died of a massive heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I didn’t have a chance to do anything for her. Some time later, I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt from the same place mother and I had dined. An attached note said: “I paid this bill in advance. I wasn’t sure that I could be there; but nevertheless, I paid for two plates – one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you, son.”
At that moment, I understood the importance of saying in time: “I LOVE YOU” and to give our loved ones the time that they deserve. Nothing in life is more important than your family. Give them the time they deserve, because these things cannot be put off till “some other time.”
Nice story…..:)
i really feel that everyone should know the value of a single person in their family.
Mother like a god……..i love u mom.
I Love you amma.
It is really a very touching story. You have a such nice wife who is caring you & your family. My salute to her. god bless you & your family.
As, I read, the whole narration of incident came to my eyes in a visual form and the conscious shaken with the ultimate truth of life, a man is forgetten in this material world the perception of heart and mind. A deep thinking will take you to the world of lonliness and creates a huge vaccum. Your story is more than a film and reminds the senses.
A heart touching Story! Tnx!

After reading this story, I realized that I need to spend time to my mother, the only woman who tried her best just to give everything that I wanted…and I want to do this back to her…..THANKS FOR THE STORY I LEARNED A LOT…

I really enjoyed and some of the stories helped me out to face with life in Iran with all difficulties. I have compassion for myself for behaving bad to my mom. Excuse me mom….your girl was nut:)

We must learn from this story …. we can have a good & happy time with our family… mother and father. Please Don’t Waste Our Time π
Sensational story, I like it.
I can hardly believe that at this time, I was able to remain strong enough for my family. I lost my dad at least a few days after I delivered my Valedictory Speech in high school and from then on, I stood as the bread winner of my family.
It’s hard to lose someone from your family, and am just grateful that God has been my companion–my constant help whenever I feel so down and sorrowful.
I’m away from my family now because I’m working for them.
To all of you who are fortunate enough to have their families with them at this time, please value your family. Give time to them. You’re lucky enough to be with your families….Not everyone has that privilege.
I miss my dad, my family.
Thanks for posting this kind of story. I really miss my mom and my father. They have vehicular accident last 2012. My mother died on Oct. 2012 and 2 months after my father died on Jan 2013. I never had a chance to say “I love you” to them. I never had a time to spend value time with them since I am working in Manila. I wish I could return the time before the accident. So those who have still parents, dont wait for another day to spend time with them coz you’ll never know when GOD will take them and will said, it’s time up.
Very impressive story it’s just remember us that we are now today because of the presence of our parents.
Life is so simple, we make it complicated, really you taught the meaning of it.
Mummy you are the best. I love you but have just realized it.
Omg… I couldn’t fight the tears…and they are still coming! That was a really inspiring story!
Hi Stephen its just an awesome inspirational story im so glad to find it..n i got emotional after reading

Very beautiful and inspring story.. Tnx dude. Be happy. Tak care.
Dear Stephen,
Thank you so much…….
Really, it is very pleasant thing for us to spend some time with someone who loves us.
I can’t restrain the pain deep down, along with the bulk of tears flowing down from my eyes after I read the part leading to his mother’s death. I lost my dad, too when I was out of our house–I was a working high school student then and I feel every words from the story.
True, as long as we still have our families, take time to spend with them. Even simple things that will remind them that they mean so much to you is such a precious one that counts as long as we still have the chance to show them our love.
I’m speechless, it’s so much touching.
Dude I don’t know who u are, but one thing I want to say is U brought tears to my eyes….I really like this website.. I have ever seen such a nice website with this much wonderful stories…Actually I am searching for short stories to improve my English but unfortunately (may be Gods grace) I got this site and u know what it reveals about me is “Before improving English u should learn about life, morals, values and many more…. I think I should concentrate on improving my life values…
Thank you and I really love you for making me to know who I am ….:-)
This is very touching indeed. To those whose parents are still alive, it is still not too late for you to do something for your mom. Unfortunately for me, my mom had passed away since I was nine. My god bless her always. Rest in peace – mom.
Very touching story. Brought tears to my eyes.
Thank you Stephen for sharing this!!!
It is heart touching.
I love you mom.
This story brings tears in my eyes, as I am living away from my sweet home and doing job, I realise that we are incomplete without our family.
I was very moved by this story. How touching it is to think of our mothers and all that they have done for us. How quickly they are gone and how devastating the loss. Thank you for reminding me that tomorrow is uncertain; now is the only time we can act in with certainty.
It is really a superb story. Too good. Thanks a lot for making me realize the importance of my family. God bless you!
Ma eyes got wet….thanks a lot for this one.

David O. Mckay
Heart touching one…..Better tell her I love her before it’s too late….I love u mom…
Hands-off to the writer, it is heart-touching
Very touching and true. A mother is very touched and happy getting the simple attention from her children. I wish all children would understand this and give it to them. It’s really nice of you for posting this story. This may help those children realize this of which perhaps they were ignorant.
Thank u for a nice story.
Very good story, today itself I will ask my husband to take my mother-in-law to dinner.
Couldn’t control the tears. Sentence from mom was very touching…. π
βI paid this bill in advance. I wasnβt sure that I could be there; but nevertheless, I paid for two plates β one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you, son.β
