A gift of love!

in Moral stories

“Can I see my baby?” the happy new mother asked.

When the bundle was nestled in her arms and she moved the fold of cloth to look upon his tiny face, she gasped. The doctor turned quickly and looked out the tall hospital window. The baby had been born without ears.

Time proved that the baby’s hearing was perfect. It was only his appearance that was marred. When he rushed home from school one day and flung himself into his mother’s arms, she sighed, knowing that his life was to be a succession of heartbreaks. He blurted out the tragedy. “A boy, a big boy … called me a freak.”

He grew up, handsome for his misfortune. A favorite with his fellow students, he might have been class president, but for that. He developed a gift, a talent for literature and music. “But you might mingle with other young people,” his mother reproved him, but felt a kindness in her heart. The boy’s father had a session with the family physician. Could nothing be done? “I believe I could graft on a pair of outer ears, if they could be procured,” the doctor decided.

Whereupon the search began for a person who would make such a sacrifice for a young man. Two years went by. Then, “You are going to the hospital, Son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need. But it’s a secret,” said the father. The operation was a brilliant success, and a new person emerged. His talents blossomed into genius, and school and college became a series of triumphs.

Later he married and entered the diplomatic service. “But I must know!” He urged his father, “Who gave so much for me? I could never do enough for him.” “I do not believe you could,” said the father, “but the agreement was that you are not to know … not yet.” The years kept their profound secret, but the day did come … one of the darkest days that a son must endure. He stood with his father over his mother’s casket. Slowly, tenderly, the father stretched forth a hand and raised the thick, reddish-brown hair to reveal that the mother had no outer ears. “Mother said she was glad she never let her hair be cut,” he whispered gently, “and nobody ever thought Mother less beautiful, did they?”

Real beauty lies not in the physical appearance, but in the heart. Real treasure lies not in what that can be seen, but what that cannot be seen. Real love lies not in what is done and known, but in what that is done but not known.

This shows in the real world world that many of us complain of our physical appearance. does this mean that GOD didn’t do an exceptional work in you? let us appreciate the smallest and simpliest thing the we possess rather than making a fuss out of it. to be talented, caring, and outstanding you don’t a pair of ears or a missing hand. you can do without it. WHAT EVER GOD CREATS IS FOR GOOD.

6. Awantika — April 13, 2010 at 10:27 pm

Mother is the one who loves her child more than her own life and one mother would not want that her child would be sad.

Mothers are gifts of life that depicts God’s affection. It is quite unfortunate that not all mothers are like this but I must say that mothers are indeed specially made. My mom, Mrs. Mercy Annang Kommey is specially made. Thank you mom, God bless you. I will sure share this story. Emmanuel A.K. Annang.

When God created mothers, He gave them the best so that nobody could complain, mother can never be compared with anything in the world becasue she is an embodiment of love, passion and true emotions as God can not be everywhere, He created mother so that He can take care of everyone… the most supreme creation of God is MOTHER…

64. Sreenath — January 2, 2013 at 4:11 am

I love you mom, this story is great!

65. Em — February 5, 2013 at 8:20 am

This story once again portrays the greatness of love through a woman as a mother. It reminds us of the women who have been significant part of our growing up—in my case, as a man, teacher, husband and as a father. Good story.

However, I am more inclined not to separate the spirit of love from the physical manifestation it takes. Reality consists of both known and unknown which makes it beautifully WHOLE.

The earless mother was a beautiful sight to see and remember because of her love for a son. Thanks for the space.

66. Jabeena — February 14, 2013 at 3:04 am

A wonderful one, I really liked it…I love my mom and dad…Thank you.

67. Storyteller — February 15, 2013 at 1:15 am

The retelling of a story that still puts a lump in my throat. Even though this story portrays the mother giving up her ears, because she is able to hide her disfigurement behind her hair, it is not only about a mother’s love, but a parent’s love for their child and their wisdom in the socially constructed world of their time.

68. Sushmita Ray — March 9, 2013 at 11:59 pm

As a mother to a child with microtia, this story makes me cry every time I revisit it. I can’t help but wonder though, can this be done? I will be asking my son’s specialist to find out! A mother’s love in unconditional!!!
